Item Attitudes of gender differences and high profile jobs in selected universities of Western Uganda(Scholars Middle East Publishers, 2018-05-30) Nansamba, Hadijah; Byabashaija, Deusdedit; Muheebwa, Florence Prescah; Schmidt, OliverThe article examines the relationship between attitudes of staff members towards gender differences and high job positions relating to employee performance and institutional development in selected Universities of Western Uganda. The study adopted an observational, cross-sectional exploration design with both quantitative and qualitative as paradigms in order to describe the data and its characteristics [6]. Questionnaires and an interview guides were employed to gather information from the respondents. Data was analyzed using frequencies, percentages and bar graphs. The study findings showed that there was a positive relationship between gender differences in decision making and top management positions. The study findings recommended that there is need to ensure building the capacity of women by improving their literacy and leadership skills, give men and women equal opportunities and treat them equally and have equal access to top jobs in all institutions of learning, the study also suggested including both men and women in policy making processes, through consultative ways in high level decision making.Item Corporate culture as a tool for competitive advantage of small and medium enterprises in Uganda: a case study of the Tourism and Hospitality Sector(SAS Publishers (Scholars Academic and Scientific Publishers), 2018-10-30) Muheebwa, Florence Prescah; Nansamba, Hadijah; Kugonza, Gorret; Mawenu, RobertThe aim of the study was to investigate the role of corporate culture on the competitive advantage of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Uganda. A cross- sectional survey design was employed to collect data from 112 tourism and hospitality organizations in western part of Uganda. Out of 112, ninety-six (96) firms were maintained for investigation. This study engaged both managers and employees as respondents. Reliability of all the variables was tested using Cronbach’s alpha (α) for inter-item consistency reliability and specifically for corporate culture was established to be at α=0.92. The analysis of results confirmed that corporate culture positively influenced competitive advantage of SMEs by 12.4%. The corporate cultural norms that had significant influence on competitive advantage were found to be mission (β=0.329, sig=0.006) and involvement (β= 0.208, sig=0.042) norms. Consistency (β=0.120, sig=0.467 and adaptability (β=0.120, sig=0.181) norms were found to be insignificant contributors to competitive advantage of SMEs. The study recommends that management uplifts the engagement of employees in decision making. Particular attention should be paid to the strategic planning process. The study was restricted to the tourism and hospitality sector. The study adopted an observational, cross-sectional exploration design with both quantitative and qualitative as paradigms in order to describe the data and its characteristics. Questionnaires and an interview guides were employed to gather information from the respondents. Data was analyzed using frequencies, percentages and bar graphs. The study findings showed that there was a positive correlation between effects of gender differences on organization performance and top management positions. The current study addressed employee fulfilment toward work-related factors, which could present the effect to service delivery, service cost and service reliability in the hospitality industry. Sixty-seven respondents form eight hospitality organizations in Uganda participated in the study in 2019. The result indicated that employee fulfilment toward work-related factors had significant relationships with service reliability, service cost as well as service delivery. It indicated that supervision style had the strongest link to service reliability while the salary factor was identified as having the lowest influence on service cost and moderate impact on service reliability and service delivery.Item Enhancing service quality of the hospitality industry in Uganda through organizational learning(SAS Publishers, India, 2019-02-25) Muheebwa, Florence Prescah; Mbabazi, Grace Mary; Nyakahuma, Charles; Rubalema, Alex; Nansamba, HadijahThe hospitality industry has focused attention on services and the delivery of quality services to customers. The conception that organizational learning influences service quality has expanded extensive recognition in both academic circles and managerial practices. Consequently, the purpose of the study was to establish the relationship between organizational learning and service quality. This research was survey-based, whereby primary data was collected with the use of a questionnaire. Data collected included dimensions of organizational learning (Information acquisition, Information interpretation, Information sharing, Information quality and Behavior and cognitive changes) and dimensions of service quality (Tangibles, Reliability, Responsiveness, Assurance and Empathy). The sample comprised of 120 employees from the hospitality organizations in Kampala, Uganda’s capital city where the head offices of these organizations are located. Simple random sampling was used to select respondents. 120 questionnaires were distributed to targeted managerial staff in the hospitality organizations in Kampala. 105 completed questionnaires were returned. However, 2 of the returned questionnaires had missing data and were discarded from analysis. As a result, 85.8% (103/ 120) of questionnaires were used in the analysis. Descriptive statistical analysis, correlation and multiple regression analysis was employed to establish the relationship between organizational learning and service quality. The overall findings revealed that organizational learning had a strong positive relationship on service quality levels within selected hospitality organizations in Kampala Uganda.Item Improving service quality in hotels in Uganda through total quality management(SAS Publishers, India, 2019-02-28) Muheebwa, Florence Prescah; Kugonza, Gorret; Mbabazi, Grace Mary; Asiimwe, MargretThe hotel industry is a dynamic one in which the guest dictates the pace and type of service. Service quality is one of the competitive priorities which enable hotels in the hospitality industry to survive. This paper aims to establish the relationship between Total Quality Management and Service Quality in hotels in Uganda, Kampala. The hypothesis that certification helped hotels to have higher performance levels is verified. This study will help managers and researchers to take decisions based on factual data and consider the importance of total quality management in the hotel sector. The main aim of this project is to analyze the motives and impact on the decision of hotels to embark or not on the implementation of a total quality management system. In order to achieve this goal, the research assessed the enablers and results of a total quality management in hotels in Uganda. Hotels considered in this study are Serena Hotel, Metropolitan Hotel and Fairway Hotel. The Serena Hotel and Metropolitan Hotel are considered because they have been winners of several awards such as the Certificate of Excellence by Trip Advisor or the National Quality Award and enjoy a very good position in the market and Fairway Hotel has ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 22000 certification. This research work showed whether the performance of the certified Serena Hotel was higher compared to the non-certified Metropolitan Hotel and Fairway Hotel. The study adopted an observational, cross-sectional exploration design with both quantitative and qualitative as paradigms in order to describe the data and its characteristics. Questionnaires and an interview guides were employed to gather information from the respondents. Data was analyzed using frequencies, percentages and bar graphs. Study findings showed that there was a positive correlation between addressing gender differences and top job positions in universities in western Uganda. The study suggested remedies like; that there is need to advertise and give scholarships to young and well qualified women to go and pursue further studies for their career development and for helping their organizations to grow. There is need to encourage girl child education through the practice of positive discrimination and affirmative action in society. The study recommend also the practice of gender mainstreaming for all academic institutions to avoid the problem of under representation of both sexes , sensitization of stakeholders for girl child education, encouraging female candidates to apply for higher job positions and addressing gender-imbalance through staff development.Item Total quality management and organizational learning in service organizations(SAS Publishers, India, 2019-05-30) Muheebwa, Florence PrescahThe purpose of the study is to investigate the role of Total Quality Management on Organizational learning in service organizations. The focus was on the examination of organizations with both successful and unsuccessful learning attributes to identify service organization total quality management systems that discriminate service organizations at either end of the success continuum. Data was collected through a survey sent to Ugandan service organizations certified to quality standard ISO9000. The findings suggest that service organizations that have a total quality management program that has exceeded expectations have been able to develop and encourage the attributes necessary for organization learning. It would appear that learning has been an important aspect for these service organizations to succeed in the quality endeavors. The findings of this study provides further empirical evidence of the role total quality management has in improving organizational outcomes especially in relation to organizational learning.Item Total quality management as a strategy for competitive advantage for small and medium size enterprises in Kampala District, Uganda(SAS Publishers (Scholars Academic and Scientific Publishers), 2018-11-30) Muheebwa, Florence Prescah; Nyakahuma, Charles; Mawenu, Robert; Mbabazi, Grace; Rubalema, AlexThe purpose of this research was to analyze the influence of Total Quality Management (TQM) on competitive advantage of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Kampala District, Uganda. This study was undertaken using a questionnaire survey where SMEs in Kampala district contend to embrace TQM practices in their administration as a strategy for competitive advantage were interrogated. Out of 112 firms, 96 were investigated. Respondents comprised one manager and one employee in each of these SMEs. Reliability of all the variables was tested using Cronbach’s alpha (α). Reliability for particularly TQM was established to be at α=0.92. Results deduced that effective implementation of TQM is a potential strategy for competitive advantage to SMEs. Results established that there exists a correlation between total quality factors and competitive advantage. Results inferred from the questionnaire survey is that the small and medium scale enterprises in Kampala are trying cope with new quality management practices to increase the productivity. From the findings, the study recommends that SMEs should establish quality management systems and improve on their quality management programs to ensure effective TQM implementation and for the overall success of the company.
