Item Dude you're a fag: masculinity and sexuality in high school(Taylor and Francis, 2013-05-07) Namatende-Sakwa, LydiaThrough a picturesque ethnographic description, Pascoe’s Dude, you’re a fag: masculinity and sexuality in high school gives a fly-on-the-wall experience of sexuality in high school. Informed by an interactionist approach to gender, the book unveils taken-for-granted ways in which masculinity is constructed through interactions, discourses and traditions like prom, sports and drama. The study was conducted at River High, a high school in California. I found the descriptions of setting, characters, discourses and events so archetypical that I was reminded of my own high school experiences in an African context. The setting is indeed a helpful case to think through contemporary constructions of masculinity, sexuality and inequality.Item Factors that Contribute to Students'Choice of University in Uganda: Implications for Sustainability of Universities in the 21st Century(Uganda Martyrs University Press, 2018) Otaala, Laura ArikoItem Gender Representation in Learning Materials: International Perspectives(Equinox Publishing Ltd, 2018) Namatende-Sakwa, LydiaGender Representation in Learning Materials: International Perspectives provides remarkable insight into research on gender and textbooks from an international perspective, illuminating diverse contexts, methodology, raising new questions, and providing pointers for further research.Item Social Media and Students' Creativity in the Use of the English Lexicon in Higher Institutions of Learning(Uganda Martyrs University Press, 2018) Nakyejwe, ChristineItem Social-economic role of mass media in peacebuilding: the case of Uganda(Springer Cham, 2024-10-16) Semambo, HenryPeacebuilding is a fundamental and gradual process which cannot only exist through proper managing of political affairs as most people think. But also, there is a need to understand other dimensions of peace which exist in the social and economic aspects of people in different countries or communities. Indeed, in the world where there is free circulation of ideas or information, mass media like; radios, televisions, songs and newspaper play a vital role in social-economic peacebuilding which may improve the quality of people’s wellbeing. Besides, people choose to use different media platforms depending on the gratification they hope to achieve from them. Therefore, inspired by uses and gratification theory, this chapter intends to explore the role of mass media in promoting social-economic peace among people. This was a case study research design and interviews were used to collect primary data. Content and descriptive analyses were used to interpret the data collected.
